I disagree a little about your pro's and cons
There's a great sequential artist namd lastscionz or something like that over at deviantart.com Lately all his best illustrations look like he made an animated sequence, hit pause, and took a picture. They all look so full of life and movement even though they're just single image illustrations or sequential comic book work. One thing I've noticed about schools that claim to teach 3d animation is that they waste a lot of time trying to get people to learn the 3d package and modeling and rendering and other stuff when really all the people want to learn is animation. And solid 2d animation skills are the foundation of most exceptional 3d animators I've ever read about.
